Background:

The "Iron Swords" conflict has resulted in the largest and most prolonged reserve mobilization in Israel's history. Thousands of reservists have been called away from their homes, placing their families under intense strain. The spouses of these reservists are facing unprecedented challenges, managing their households single-handedly while dealing with financial, professional, and emotional hardships. The entire family unit is affected, as the responsibility of maintaining day-to-day life falls solely on the spouse left behind.

About the Forum:

The IDF Reservists' Wives Forum was founded during the conflict, sparked by a Facebook post from Adi Langer Shabat, the wife of a reservist. What started as a spontaneous call for support has evolved into a powerful community of over 15,000 spouses of reservists. The forum, led by 12 committed women, has driven significant changes in public discourse, policy, and government action on behalf of the 100,000 reservist families. Collaborating with government bodies, the Knesset, IDF, local authorities, and media outlets, the forum has become a vital advocate for these families.

Key Data:

  • 100,000 reservists with families, impacting approximately 250,000 children (1% of Israel's population).

  • Independent survey results in collaboration with the Maagar Mochot Research Institute:

    • 80% of reservists' spouses report feelings of despair and helplessness.

    • 84% observe changes in their children's independence, increasing their reliance on the parent at home.

    • 27% of employed spouses have experienced job-related impacts, including dismissal, resignation, or reduced hours.

    • 83% of self-employed reservists and their spouses report significant income loss.

Achievements:

  • Economic Assistance: The forum's advocacy was instrumental in creating a NIS 9 billion national financial support program for reservist families (January 2024).

  • Legislative Wins: Historic legislation was passed, offering job protection for reservists and their spouses, including retroactive grants and extended job security periods.

  • Legal Advocacy: A volunteer network of 40 lawyers, coordinated by the forum, has prevented hundreds of job dismissals and instances of unpaid leave, inspiring similar systems in government and military frameworks.

  • Public Awareness: Through extensive media campaigns and a strong social media presence, the forum has brought national attention to the struggles of reservist families.

Municipal Impact:

The forum has built a nationwide network of 60 volunteers working with local and regional councils to advocate for the rights and recognition of reservist families at the municipal level.

Awards:

  • Ruth Rappaport Prize: Awarded for groundbreaking activism in women's leadership.

  • Lighting the Torch at Israel’s 76th Independence Day Ceremony: Honoring their contribution to the resilience of the nation.
